Medicare Part B: Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B is not free of charge. The typical beneficiary who is new to Medicare in 2017 will pay $134 per month for Medicare Part B. In most cases, this amount is simply deducted from your Social Security benefit each month. Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes may pay an increased premium for Medicare Part B due to an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).

Enrolling in Medicare Part B typically happens automatically if you are already receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65. The monthly premium will simply be deducted from your Social Security benefit amount each month.

If you aren’t planning to start receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65 and still need to enroll in Medicare Part B you start the process three months before your 65th birth month. If you need help applying for Medicare Part B or have questions about the process you can contact one of our licensed specialists for guidance. We are here to make this easy for you!

You can delay enrolling into Medicare Part B by contacting Medicare and as long as you have had creditable medical insurance you will be able to avoid any late enrollment penalties. When you decide to retire or if you lose that medical insurance you can then apply for Medicare Part B. At this time you will also have to complete a Request for Employment Information form.

**THIS IS IMPORTANT** This form needs to be signed by the employer that you were receiving benefits from and can take some extra time to get processed.

The benefits of Medicare Part B are pretty simple compared to Part A. With Medicare Part B you are responsible for paying:

  • Your deductible (for 2017 the Medicare Part B deductible is $183).

  • 20% of any expensed covered by Medicare Part B.

  • Any excess charges the healthcare provider may charge if they do not accept Medicare Assignment.

It is important to remember that the 20% you are responsible for paying for Medicare Part B expenses has no limit or cap. With things like outpatient surgeries, rehabilitation, chemotherapy treatment, and outpatient medical test like MRI’s this could still leave you paying thousands of dollars of medical bills.

A Medicare Supplement plan can protect you against these potential risks. With the wide range of options (and prices) available there are medicare supplement options for almost any budget.
